Shop fined for selling substandard food in Ooty

Tourists from Tamil Nadu and other states, as well as foreign countries, are flocking to Ooty to enjoy the excellent weather conditions that have prevailed due to the summer vacations in the

Nilgiris district.

Following this, the public expressed dissatisfaction with the quality of food served in restaurants.

Based on these reports, Nilgiris District Collector Amrit has directed the District Food Safety Department to conduct surprise inspections of restaurants throughout the district to ensure food quality.

Based on this, a team led by District Designated Officer Suresh and comprising Food Safety Officers Nandakumar and Sivaraj conducted a surprise inspection of restaurants in and around Ooty Commercial Road.

In this study, about 15 kg of unhygienic and rotten chicken was found and destroyed.

A total fine of Rs 12,000 was imposed on six restaurants at the rate of Rs 2,000 each for functioning in an unhygienic manner.

Following the action of the Food Safety Department, the above-mentioned restaurants are continuing to clean up their kitchens and other places.

District Designated Officer Suresh said:

All the restaurants functioning in the Nilgiris district should provide only clean drinking water and good quality food items to the public.

All restaurants are required to maintain cleanliness at the place where their food items are being prepared.

Only stainless utensils should be used for cooking. Cooking oil used for cooking should not be used more than once.

Avoid using newspaper papers for serving food items and not using plastic items to pack in meat shops.

Strict action will also be taken against the erring persons under the Food Safety Standards Act.
