Kurumba association making a stand in Coimbatore – A plea to be Recognised as a Scheduled Tribe

Protesters gathered in front of the Coimbatore South Tahsildar's office, asking that the Kurumba community be added to the scheduled tribal list and granted ST status, as well as representation in political authority.

Coimbatore: The Kurumba Sangha protested for political representation and a ST certificate. The protest, headed by President Kalpana Velusamy on behalf of Coimbatore District Kurumba Sangam, was staged in front of the Coimbatore South Tahsildar's office.

The Kurumba Kurummans community should be added to the list of indigenous peoples and awarded a ST certificate right away. The Kurumba Kurummans community should be given the positions of President and Members of a Goat Rearers Welfare Board. Because our family occupations, such as goat herding and wool weaving, are declining, we must investigate and devise a proper insurance plan. The demonstration encouraged all political parties to grant adequate recognition to the Kurumba Kurummans people, who are qualified for representation in political authority at the Tamil Nadu state level.

Additionally, a community of 50 lakh people is not receiving the acknowledgment it deserves from the government. More than 50 members of the Kurumba community marched with signs and placards, pleading with the government and all political parties to give the group instant political recognition or risk being subjected to a backlash.

The Kurumba Sangha youth wing convenor Murugesh, secretary Pon Suresh Babu, treasurer Krishnasamy, secretary Devaraj, deputy secretaries and office bearers all took part in the demonstration.
