The native Badaga community from Kadai Kambatty and Jackanarai villages near Kotagiri celebrated the festival of 'Uppu Attuva Habba' with great fervour, in all religious earnestness for the well-being of their livestock.

The Nilgiris: In order to ensure that livestock are disease-free in Kotagiri, the Badagas celebrated the 'Uppu Attuva Habba' with pomp, gaiety and religious fervour.

Badaga folk from over 100 villages, including Kadai Kambatty and Jackanarai villages near Kotagiri in the Nilgiris district celebrated the Uppu Hattuva festival in a grand manner on Monday. They dissolved salt, green gram and grass brought from their homes in vessels filled with water and offered the water to cows and worshipped them.

Following this, the Badaga community worshipped Goddess Nature, and then brought leaves and plants from the forests to their houses and hung them in the courtyard.

It is widely believed among the Badaga community that this will prevent disease from occurring in cattle.

Moreover, it is also believed by the community that by drinking salt water, the cows will returnn home no matter where they go grazing from dawn to dusk.

Later, the Badagas prepared 'payasam' at home and distributed it to people in their village.

The 'Uppu Hattuva Habba' is celebrated every year by the entire Badaga community to symbolize the brotherhood of the community.

The Badagas also believe that celebrating the festival will remove drought, usher rain and improve health.
