India’s second Transgender Police woman Nazriya submits resignations alleging torture and discrimination by a superior officer in Coimbatore

The Trans policewoman also said she had faced similar assaults on her dignity when she worked in Ramanathapuram district due to which she had wished to end her life.

Coimbatore: Trans Police woman Nazriya, reportedly the second Transgender police woman in India, on Saturday submitted her resignation to the City Commissioner of Police V, Balakrishnan.

Nazriya, who has been working as Police Constable under the Coimbatore District's Special Juvenile Aid police (SJAP)alleged continued harassment and gender discrimination from her superior officer Inspector Meenabika before submitting her resignation.

The transwoman cop also said she had faced similar assaults on her dignity when she worked in Ramanathapuram district due to which she had also wished to end her life.

“After getting transferred to the Coimbatore district I expected some change in the attitude of my colleagues and superiors. I wished my situation would change but the very first offensive statement was about my gender and then about my community as I hail from the scheduled caste. For a long time, I was subjected to high mental stress due to this “ Nazriya alleged.

Nazriya added that the “Commissioner of police has assured her to take up an inquiry into her allegations”

In the meanwhile, the City Police Commissioner V. Balakrishnan has refused to accept her resignation and instructed her to report to duty after a brief medical leave.

Commenting on Nazriya's resignation, Balakrishnan said, "I have refused to accept her resignation and asked her to file a written complaint regarding the allegation of sexual discrimination”.

“We aim to encourage and include transgender in the police service and her resignation would cause a regression while looking at it from the social perspective."

However, the Commissioner said that complaints such as frequent leaves, and alcohol consumption during work hours, have also been reported against the Policewoman Nazriya.

“Hence an enquiry headed by G Sandeesh, Deputy Commissioner of Coimbatore (North) will be conducted and appropriate action will be taken on the basis,” he said.
