'City Corporation allocates Rs.34 lakh to control stray dog menace in the city streets' - Corporation Commissioner Prathap

It has been planned to sterilize five thousand stray dogs in the City Corporation, in the next few months for which a fund allocation of Rs.35 lakh has been made.

Coimbatore: In order to control the stray dog menace in the city a plan has been drawn up by the City Corporation and a fund allocation of Rs.35 lakhs has been allocated.

It is planned to sterilize five thousand stray dogs by the City Corporation, for which a fund allocation of Rs.35 lakh has been made.

According to sources, the nuisance of stray dog menace reached alarming proportions in most places of the corporation limits like Ukkadam, Ramanathapuram, Sripathi Nagar, Karumbukadai, and Racecourse.

These dogs chase cyclists and motorcyclists, causing extreme fear. They also get into automobile wheels and get injured. As the number of stray dogs continues to increase, children in those areas are unable to walk alone fearing dog menace.

Recently, one such case was reported in the Rose Garden area, where a girl was surrounded by dogs at night. Hearing her scream neighbours come up to help and saved her from the group of stray dogs.

City Corporation officials said that stray dog sterilization centres are functioning at Ondiputhur, Seeranayakanpalayam and Ukkadam.

Through this, an average of 50 stray dogs are sterilized per day. Last year about 2,500 stray dogs were sterilized. The city corporation plans to sterilize 5000 stray dogs at the rate of 1000 per zone this year.

Earlier speaking to Simplicity, M.Prathap I.A.S., Coimbatore Corporation Commissioner said, "We are concerned to ensure public safety and are taking our best possible measure to curb stray dog menace.

“Though it is not possible to completely eradicate the stray dog menace at one go, our team is working on further expansion of the sterilization centres. The plan to propose two more centres in the city is under consideration and will be announced in the current year's budget itself." M.Prathap said.
