Supreme Court upholds Madras HC verdict allowing Edappadi K Palaniswami to continue as General Secretary of AIADMK

The Supreme Court on Thursday pronounced its verdict on the appeal filed by O Panneerselvam challenging the election of Edappadi K Palaniswami as the interim general secretary of the AIADMK.

New Delhi: The Supreme Court has upheld the Madras high court's verdict that the appointment of Edappadi K Palaniswami as the interim general secretary is legally valid. It has also dismissed the appeal filed by the OPS faction.

The Supreme Court on Thursday pronounced its verdict on the appeal filed by O Panneerselvam challenging the election of Edappadi K Palaniswami as the interim general secretary of the AIADMK.

The AIADMK general council meeting was held on July 11 last year at Vanakaram near Chennai.

AIADMK Co-coordinator and former Chief minister Edappadi K Palaniswami was elected as the Interim general secretary at the meeting.

A resolution was also passed at the meeting to remove O Panneerselvam and his supporters from the primary membership of the party.

Reacting to this development, O.Panneerselvam filed a petition in the Madras High Court challenging the general body's decision to oust him and his supporters.

Hearing the case, the single judge of the High Court stayed the general body's decision. An appeal was filed on behalf of Edappadi K Palaniswami against this.

The judges, who heard the case, ruled that the AIADMK general council meeting held on July 11 is valid.

Again, Panneerselvam's side had filed an appeal in the Supreme Court against the High court verdict, which was in favour of Edappadi K Palaniswami.

A Bench of Justices Dinesh Maheshwari and Hrishikesh Roy, pronounced the verdict today and they. upheld the High court's verdict that the general body meeting electing the EPS as General Secretary is valid.

Accordingly, the election of Edappadi K Palaniswami as the interim general secretary of the AIADMK will be valid. He has also become the official general secretary of the AIADMK.

The verdict in the Supreme Court is seen as a major setback for O Panneerselvam's political future.
