Elephant calf carcass found in Periyanaickenpalayam forest range, cause of death ascertained

Forest department officials have sent the body parts of a calf elephant carcass, which was found dead in the Periyanaickenpalayam forest range to lab test.


Coimbatore: Forest officials who found the body parts of the dead elephant cub, including bone, hair and skin, in Periyanaickenpalayam forest range have sent it for a lab test to ascertain its cause of death.

The carcass was found by the field staff in Thadagam reserve forest area in Manguli under the Periyanaickenpalayam forest range.

As foul smell emanated from certain areas, the forest department staff reached the spot and found the body parts and bones of the dead elephant calf in a scattered manner.

Following this, an inspection was carried out led by District Veterinary Officer Sudhakar in the presence of Assistant Conservator of Forests Senthil Kumar, Ranger Selvaraj and volunteers of environmental organizations.

Based on the body part bones found, it was found out that the elephant calf may have been about three weeks old and the cub may have been born dead and eaten by scavengers in the forest.

Later the carcass was ws buried by the forest department in the same area.
