Coconut traders pass resolutions to scale down wages for workers at a meeting in Pollachi

A meeting of coconut traders was held at Pollachi, which passed a resolution to reduce the wages for the workforce in the wake of a fall in coconut market prices.


Coimbatore: A meeting of coconut farmers and traders was held at Pollachi in which a resolution was passed to reduce the wages for peeling coconuts.

More than 500 farmers and traders from Pollachi and Udumalpet participated in the meeting.

As the coconut prices have suffered a fall, the meeting decided that coconut farmers and coconut traders should take drastic measures.

Some of the resolutions passed in the meeting included when the coconut was sold at a higher price, 82 paise per coconut was paid as wages for peeling work. Now that the price has come down, so 70 paise would be given. Workers have been asked to cooperate.

Other resolutions included that the central government should provide Rs 150 as a support price for copra coconut, and coconut oil production units should be set up in Tamil Nadu and distributed to the public at fair-price shops.
