The ‘TanTea’ workers submit petition to District Collector, demanding benefits including wage hike

The petitioners alleged that the TanTea management has not given the salary hike as was announced by the government to the employees and that the employees who were urged to take voluntary retirement have not been paid due compensation, yet.

Coimbatore: A large number of estate workers are working at the Lawson tea estate at Cinchona in Valparai taluk of Coimbatore district.

Meanwhile, the representatives of these workers submitted a petition to the Coimbatore District collectorate demanding wage hike and other benefits.

According to the petitioners, the Tamil Nadu government's TanTea management has not given them the salary hike as was announced. The district collector has to speed up the release of the outstanding arrears.

In October last year, it was announced that the entire Valparai division would be handed over to the Forest department, following which the workers were urged to take voluntary retirement.

Based on this, the workers have given voluntary retirement in writing to the TanTea management.

“We have asked for a compensation of Rs 25 lakh and 3 cents of land and a tenement with basic amenities at the allotted plot. But the Tan Tea management has not paid heed to our demands to date" the petitioners said.

The workers also alleged that no basic amenities were provided to them as the handover process has been delayed.

“The Tan Tea management should also safeguard lives by removing thorny bushes due to which wildlife is roaming in the area. The Tan Tea management should ensure the safety of the workers” the petitioners demanded.
