Wild elephants rampage Pannimadai and Chinnathadagam residential areas of Coimbatore

While a lone elephant entered Thaliyur near Pannimadai in Coimbatore and uprooted and damaged coconut trees, the Forest Department chased away three elephants that entered Chinnathadagam.


Coimbatore: Over 50 wild elephants have been recorded as inhabiting the Mangarai hills near Anaikatti in Coimbatore district. These elephants have recently been seen entering residential areas and gardens at the foothills and damaging crops.

Meanwhile, for the past two months, wild elephants, either lone or as herds in the Thadagam area have been entering the gardens in the surrounding areas and damaging crops. A lone elephant which entered Thaliyur near Pannimadai on Wednesday night entered the garden of a resident, Marudhachalam and uprooted five-year-old coconut trees to eat them.

Similarly, three wild elephants entered the Sowdambika Nagar area in the Thaneer Pandhal area near Chinnathadagam in Coimbatore, on Wednesday night. Panic-stricken residents informed the Coimbatore Forest Department, following which officials rushed to the spot and chased the wild elephants into the forest. A viral video of the elephants being chased away by lit torches is doing the rounds.

Fearing these elephants that frequently enter residential areas and farmlands in search of food but end up damaging crops and property, locals have urged the Forest Department to take appropriate measures to prevent elephants from entering residential areas.
