MLA SP Velumani's plea seeking quashing of tender scam cases to be pronounced tomorrow

An important judgement that has stayed away action in the cases against former Minister SP Velumani will be pronounced tomorrow against the petitions for quashing of cases registered against him for alleged irregularities in the allotment of tenders and amassing disproportionate assets.

Coimbatore: The Coimbatore and Chennai Corporations have been plagued by alleged irregularities in the allocation of tenders during the previous regime. The Madras High Court will pronounce its verdict tomorrow on the petitions filed by former minister Velumani seeking quashing of cases registered against him for amassing assets worth Rs 58 crore disproportionate to his known sources of income and in the tender setting cases.

In the case filed seeking quashing of corruption cases filed by Arappor Iyyakkam and DMK's R S Bharathi, while all the arguments were completed, the verdict was postponed without specifying a date. In this case, the judges are scheduled to deliver the verdict in these cases at 2:30 pm tomorrow.

A bench of Justices P N Prakash and R M D Teekaraman was hearing the matter. On behalf of SP Velumani, the SP of anti-corruption department submitted a statement that there was no basis in the complaint against him. It was argued that the Vigilance Commissioner had approved it and the Tamil Nadu government had also taken a decision in January 2020 to drop the action.

Velumani's side argued that the tender was floated in a transparent manner and that he had no role in it and was not part of the committee. It was also argued that he had misled the court by registering a case against him on the basis of the report of the Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG) on the execution of the works without considering the preliminary investigation.

It is to be noted that the judges will pronounce the verdict on the cases filed by Velumani at 2:30 pm tomorrow.
