Public take to road repair to highlight negligence of Highways Department in Coimbatore

The public alleged that they had repeatedly requested the Highways Department to repair the Mettupalayam Road in Coimbatore but it was to no avail and hence they had decided to take up temporary measures to repair the road.

Coimbatore: The National Highway from the Thudiyalur Police Station to the Colony Gate has been dilapidated due to poor road-laying. For many years, due to lack of proper rainwater drainage system and with the construction waste being dumped, the area adjacent to the road resembles a mound of mud.

The public complain that during the rainy season, there was no way for the rain water to drain properly and that the road was stagnant like a pond, due to which the roads become ridden with potholes and accidents occurred frequently.

The public lamented that despite several requests to the Highways Department to repair the road and clear the rainwater channels, no action had been taken yet.

Many places on the road from Vadamadurai to Colony Gate are reportedly ridden with potholes causing accidents. The public complained that they had requested the Highways Department to close the potholes and repair as well as maintain the road, but no action had been taken thus far. A few days ago, it is reported that a two-wheeler motorist had hit a pothole in the middle of the road and was grievously injured and being treated for his critical condition.

Following the accident, the local traders and the public in the area decided to take the repairs of the raod into their hands and joined forces to level the potholes in the middle of the road temporarily by pouring concrete mixture. The Thudiyalur police regulated the traffic while the work was underway by the public.
