7 locals from Coimbatore trapped in Bhavani river rescued by fire brigade personnel

Seven persons from Peelamedu in Coimbatore were bathing in Bhavani river in Mettupalayam when water from Pillur Dam was released, leaving them trapped in the gush of water in the river.


Coimbatore: Chiranjeevi, Sanjay, Ravikumar, Saravanan, Sathish Kumar, Ganesh Kumar and Manikandan, all residents of Peelamedu in Coimbatore were taking a bath in the Bhavani river flowing through Vilamarathur village in Mettupalayam on Thursday evening.

Water was suddenly released from the Pillur Dam that evening, as a result of which the water level in the river suddenly increased and the youth were caught in the rush of water. The youth had to swim to higher reaches to take shelter.



Four of the seven men climbed up a tree in the middle of the river while the remaining three men stood in the highlands and shouted for help.



Passersby immediately informed the fire department. Acting on the information, the fire department officials who rushed to the spot rescued those trapped in the river and brought them ashore.

In spite of lack of light during the rescue operation and with high levels of water in the river, the firefighters who were involved in the rescue work ensured all seven trapped were rescued with the utmost care. Public lauded the tireless efforts of the fire brigade.
