'Madras Eye' makes comeback in Tamil Nadu; CMCH Dean assures no cause for panic in Coimbatore district

The CMCH Dean assured that thus far there had not been any surge in cases of 'Madras Eye in Coimbatore district and that they were providing treatment to the patients with Madras Eye in a separate OP section.

Coimbatore: While the cases of Conjunctivitis, widely known as ‘Madras Eye,’ started spreading across the Tamil Nadu putting cities including Chennai on the risk radar, the Coimbatore Medical College Hospital Dean, Dr. Nirmala told Simplicity that there is no surge in cases in Coimbatore district, but warned the public to be on vigil.

Madras Eye cases reportedly increase in line with the arrival of northeast monsoon, especially among children. Chennai saw a surge in such cases daily, recording nearly 80-100 cases, while Madurai witnessed 25-30 patients undergoing treatment for 'Madras Eye.'

As far as Coimbatore district is concerned, the CMCH Dean assured that thus far there had not been any surge in cases of 'Madras Eye.' “We are providing treatment to the patients with Madras Eye in a separate OP section. The department of Ophthalmology is doing its work to treat patients. We are unsure about the number of patients, but there is no surge in cases,” assured Dr. Nirmala.

'Madras Eye' is caused by a bacterial or viral infection which spreads through the secretion of the affected eye. Anyone who comes in contact with the affected secretion tend to get it themselves. Irritation, watering, red eyes, sticky discharge, and sensitivity to light are some of the symptoms to watch out for in Madras Eye. However, when the cornea is infected, it can result in blurred vision. Doctors say it takes a minimum of five days to get cured of Madras Eye and in some cases, it takes a longer time.

To prevent spread of Madras Eye, doctors advise patients to stay isolated until they get cured since things, including their pillows, towels etc. can potentially spread the disease. They also advise using proper hand towels to dry out the water secretion from the eyes and also to avoid self-medication.

The Tamil Nadu Health Minister, Ma. Subramanian briefed the media on Monday that the State has witnesseed 4,500 Madras Eye cases daily and advised affected people not to venture out unnecessarily. “Persons affected should avoid self-medication, and we have taken steps to curb the spread in the State,” assured Minister Ma. Subramanian.
