The elderly woman, Maragatham was killed on the spot when she was hit by a car while trying to cross the Coimbatore-Palakkad Highway near K G Chavadi in Coimbatore.
Coimbatore: An elderly woman was hit by a speeding car and died on the spot while she was trying to cross the road on the Coimbatore-Palakkad Highway near K G Chavadi in Coimbatore, while tending her goats in the area.
Kuppusamy hails from Madhukarai's Patel Road in Coimbatore district and lives with his wife Maragatham (72) near K G Chavadi Gandhi Nagar, tending goats as a means of livelihood.
On Monday, as is her normal routine, Maragatham was allowing their goats to graze near the Coimbatore-Palakkad National Highway near K G Chavadi. While attempting to cross the road, Maragatham was hit by a speeding car coming from Walayar towards Coimbatore. She was thrown afar due to the impact and died on the spot.
On receiving information, the K G Chavadi police reached the accident spot and recovered Maragatham's body and sent it to the Coimbatore Government Hospital for post-mortem.
The police are presently interrogating a youth named Sukumar from Dindigul district who was driving the car at high speed. The tragic death of the old woman caused great grief among the people of the area.
