Officers appointed to monitor works to be carried out in view of northeast monsoon in Coimbatore

Coimbatore: Corporation Commissioner Prathap chaired a meeting with corporation officials on the precautionary measures taken in view of the northeast monsoon at the main office meeting hall of Coimbatore Corporation.



Speaking at the meeting, Commissioner Pratap said that zonal monitoring officers have been appointed to monitor the works to be carried out in view of the northeast monsoon in the areas under Coimbatore Corporation.

Accordingly, Dr S Selvasurabhi has been appointed for the east zone, Subanandhini for the western zone, Rajasekharan for the central zone, Govindarajulu for the north zone and Balasubramaniyam for the south zone.

As a precautionary measure, various major canals and storm water drains of the corporation have been desilted and many more storm water drains are now tarred and ready, he said.



Corporation Commissioner Prathap said the rainwater accumulated in the last few days was immediately removed using two additional high-speed electric motors on the lower side of the Avinashi flyover and the Kikani bridge. He said that at present, surveying the 86, 87 and 88 wards of south zone is currently underway to identify water bodies, nan nila poramboke and route and remove encroachments.

Corporation Commissioner Prathap said that the encroachments in the areas would be removed immediately and necessary steps would be taken by the municipal administration to drain out the rainwater. He also said that it has been instructed to monitor the quantity of surplus water released from Periyakulam and Valankulam and desilt the storm water drains wherever required in the corporation.

He said that 500 sandbags at the rate of 100 each have been instructed to be kept ready for all the five zones of Coimbatore Corporation. In Coimbatore, work is underway to remove the encroachments on the slopes of storm water drains, roads and streets, he said.

Coimbatore Corporation Commissioner Prathap said that special medical camps have been directed to be conducted for doctors and nurses working in the city health centres. They have been instructed to stock adequate quantity of medicines and tablets and keep them ready for dispatch of disinfectant and water-bearing motorised lorries to the required locations, he said. He added that it has been instructed that if there are any government buildings which are damaged and unusable, they should be demolished immediately.
