Ready to face northeast monsoon - Coimbatore district administration busy taking precautionary measures

Though the northeast monsoon rains heavily in Coimbatore, precautionary measures are being taken to ensure that normal life does not get impacted. The district administration has announced that 66 camps have been set up for all the basic needs of the public.


Coimbatore: With the onset of northeast monsoon, major cities, including Chennai, have been severely affected, bringing normal life to a complete standstill.

Coimbatore district, which is now next only to Chennai, has started receiving northeast monsoon rains.

In this context, the Coimbatore District Administration said, “Precautionary measures have also been prepared to deal with the calamity caused by the monsoon rains. These arrangements have been made in all areas under the revenue department including medical department, veterinary department, highways department, local body department, pwd town panchayat, municipality and corporation areas.

The medical department has kept medicines and doctors in the PHCs on standby, especially during the rainy season, for the health hazards caused to the public.

Medicines required for the cattle have also been prepared on behalf of the Animal Husbandry Department. On behalf of the district administration, it has also been requested to call immediately in case of any problem for the cattle.

The road works have been completed through the Highways Department. It has already been instructed to close the dug pits and repair the damaged roads immediately and the work has been completed.

During the last monsoon 2019-20, landslides have occurred in valparai and other areas.

Wire nets have been installed in landslide prone areas and stone ridges have also been erected. On behalf of the Public Works Department, the canals leading to the tanks have been repaired and the water flow to the tanks has been ensured without any hindrance.

It is expected that this northeast monsoon will help in reaching the full capacity of the ponds and lakes as most of the ponds are currently 70 to 80 per cent waterlogged. According to the district administration, the water management of wells, ponds and ponds will prevail for the use of the public and farmers during heavy rains.

Various precautionary measures have been taken for the safety of the public during the heavy rains. The public can call the officials and disaster rescue teams to the control room number and ask for help.

There are 11 control rooms in the taluka areas at the rate of one per taluka. 7 control rooms in 7 municipalities, 5 control rooms on one-per-zone basis in metropolitan areas. One in each of the two primary offices, namely, the Office of the District Collector and the Corporation's Office. 25 control rooms have been set up across Coimbatore district.

Additional surveillance has been intensified at 16 places identified by the district administration as previously flooded areas which are seen as low-lying areas in the district.

A total of 66 camps have been set up with basic necessities such as food, medicines and basic necessities for the general public.
