Siruthuli's 'Shanthi Panai Vanam' and 'Panaiyagam' inaugurated at Pachapalayam

On October 27, Siruthuli embarked on a journey of generating awareness and propagating the virtues of the Palmyra tree to create 'Shanthi Panai Vanam' and 'Panaiyagam' at Lakshmipuram Pachapalayam, at the Perur Chettipalayam Panchayat. On a 1.7-acre land, 185 palm trees were planted and 2000 saplings were planted in Miyawaki style.


The Palmyra tree is an integral part of our culture since the Sangam times and is known as the State tree of Tamil Nadu. Every part of this tree is useful and plays a vital role in the ecosystem and economic progress of the region, endowing health and peace to the body and mind.

To generate awareness and to propagate the virtues of the Palmyra tree, Siruthuli embarked on a journey on October 27 to create 'Shanthi Panai Vanam'and 'Panaiyagam' at Lakshmipuram Pachapalayam, at the Perur Chettipalayam Panchayat. On a 1.7-acre land, 185 palm trees were planted in half the areasurrounded by a beautiful paved walkway. At the inaugural event, 2000 saplings were planted in Miyawaki style in the remaining once acre.

The Shanthi Panai Vanam has a Resource Centre and Conference Hall called 'Panaiyagam' which has been set up to highlight the merits of Panai and Panai products and the importance of Panai cultivation. The Resource Centre houses an exhibit on the details of Panai, uses of Panai, ways to cultivate and grow Panai and information on products based out of Panai. This Information Centre can be used by farmers to conduct workshops and use the space for knowledge exchange and the promotion of their products.

The Siruthuli team congratulated Cibi and Udaya, the architects who created the beautiful Resource Centre building using only palm products. The 'Panaiyagam' was inaugurated by Dr. B K Krishnaraj Vanavarayar by lighting the lamp, marking the auspicious occasion. Prasad, representing the people of Perur Chettipalayam and A V Varadarajan on behalf of the Industry and Trade Organizations participated and offered felicitations during the event. Panchayat stakeholders, farmers, student volunteers and members of Siruthuli took part in the event.

Avid nature-lover and propagator of Green Panchayat, N P Shanthi Prasad, Panchayat President of Perur Chettipalayam was honoured with the 'Siruthuli Pasumai Award' for her relentless efforts towards making her Panchayat an eco-friendly one. The Managing Trustee of Siruthuli, Vanitha Mohan expressed that the love and interest shown by the general public to know about Panai has been overwhelming and even gratifying, given the potential of Panai as a great aquifer recharger and water harvester among other things.

The event concluded with thanking the Anna University Green Warriors who volunteered in the event and helped in planting the saplings, The Residents Association of Coimbatore (RAAC) for their extended support and the funding partners Shanthi Gears and Expleo Solutions.
