A scan revealed that the bolt nut was trapped in the trachea in the passage to the left side of the lung. A challenging surgery was performed by Dr. Sudhakar of the Head, Ear, Nose and Throat Department, Coimbatore Government Hospital, Coimbatore to save the electrician.
Coimbatore: Shamshuddin (55), a native of Kuniyamuthur in Coimbatore who works as an electrician unknowingly swallowed the bolt nut he was holding between his lips while working.
He was admitted rushed to the Ear, Nose and Throat Department of the Coimbatore Medical College Hospital, at around 10 am on Thursday due to shortness of breath.

A CT scan confirmed that the boltnut he had swallowed was stuck in the trachea in the passage to the left side of his lung.

Shamshuddin was immediately operated upon with a bronchial intubation device and the bolt nut was removed. He is reportedly doing fine after undergoing surgery. The special surgery which was led by the ENT Division Professor Dr. A R Ali Sultan, Dr. V Saravanan, anaesthesiologist Manimozhi Selvan Madanagopalan and a team of doctors was considered successful to save the electrician's life.
Prof. A Nirmala, Dean, CMCH lauded the medical team for successfully performing the challenging surgery.
