The protesters demanded that Savukku Sankar's website be blocked for making derogatory remarks against the Tamil community, judiciary and police.
Coimbatore: Over 300 cadres of the Netaji Makkal Iyakkam staged a protest near the Coimbatore South Tahsildar's Office condemning political commentator Savukku Sankar and demanding the blocking of his website.

On July 22, Savukku Shankar had participated in an interview to a private YouTube channel that corruption was rampant in the entire judiciary. At that time, he not only criticized a judgment but also personally criticized a judge. Following this, Justice G R Swaminathan suo motu filed a contempt petition against Savukku Shankar in the Madurai High Court. Savukku Shankar refused to apologise in the case. The case was heard by a bench of Justices G R Swaminathan and Pugazhendhi. Savukku Shankar was sentenced to six months in jail for "contempt of court." He was later lodged in the Madurai Central Jailand then later shifted to Cuddalore Central Jail for security reasons.

Meanwhile, more than 300 members of the Netaji Makkal Iyakkam in Coimbatore South Zone protested and raised slogans condemning Savukku Shankar.

On behalf of Netaji Makkal Mandram, it was urged to block Savukku Sankar and his website for making derogatory remarks against the Tamil community, judiciary and police.
