Lone wild elephant attacks vehicles in Mullur area on Mettupalayam-Kotagiri road

Motorists in almost 60 vehicles came to a halt on the Mettupalayam-Kotagiri road waiting for the lone wild elephant to pass. When some of them tried to click pictures of the elephant, the elephant reportedly became enraged and broke the windshields of more than five vehicles, including a car and a van.


The Nilgiris: The movement of wild animals in and around Kotagiri has been on the rise for the past few months. Wild animals have been emerging from the forest cover in search of food and water in residential areas, tea plantations and roadsides.

A lone wild elephant has been roaming around for a long time in Mullur area on Mettupalayam-Kotagiri road at night. Motorists in almost 60 vehicles came to a halt on the Mettupalayam-Kotagiri road waiting for the lone wild elephant to pass. When some of them tried to click pictures of the elephant, the elephant reportedly became enraged and broke the windshields of more than five vehicles, including a car and a van. Fearing for their lives, some motorists turned their vehicles around and sped away.

Only after the elephant moved away to a tea estate, motorists were relieved and continued on their journey on the same road. The Forest Department has instructed torists and motorists not to stop or go near elephants just to click pictures of the elephants.
