Two-day International conference on Women and human rights held in Bharathiar University


Department of Women's studies of Bharathiar University (BU) had organised a University Grants Commission of India (UGC) sponsored two-day International conference on 'Women and Human Rights- An international Perspective' on 1 and 2 February. About 350 participants took part in this conference.



Susan M Shaw, Professor of Women, Gender, and Sexuality Studies, Oregon State University, USA presided over the conference and delivered the chief guest address. In her address, she highlighted about the women rights, gender inequality, feminism and dowry in marriage.

Dr. B. Vanitha, registrar (In-charge) of the BU delivered the presidential and the keynote address. In her speech she emphasised that education is about developing attitude, awareness of one's own importance and being empowered with a positive outlook in life.

V.P. Sarathi, chairperson, Human Rights Forum participated in the conference as Guest of honour. In his address to the audience, he elaborated on women rights as human rights, women as a mediator of peace narrated with an example and gender equality.

Dr. Minie Mathew, Director, Centre for Women’s Studies, Avinashilingam University for Women, Coimbatore, delivered the felicitation address. She highlighted the importance of women rights and women empowerment.

Dr. K.R. Murugan, Professor and Head, Department of Social Work, Alagappa University, Karaikudi in his felicitation address explained about the Article 14 (Equality before law) and Article 15 (Prohibition of discrimination on grounds of religion, race, caste, sex or place of birth).

Dr. Kamalaveni, Assistant Professor, delivered the vote of thanks.
