Coimbatore: The Coimbatore City Police has launched a street-to-street library scheme to prevent the emergence of juvenile delinquents and to encourage children to take to reading and avoid misuse of cell phones.
Speaking at a press conference on the project, the Coimbatore City Police Commissioner Balakrishnan said, "To prevent the emergence of juvenile delinquents and in order to encourage children to engage in creative activities in the evenings, we have launched a street-to-street library in Coimbatore. Importantly, bookshelves have been given at 30 locations today on the basis of a library in every street, be it slums, apartments, etc. and the plan is to keep 200 books. The initiative has been taken on the basis that the habit of reading should be introduced to children.
Therefore, comics, fables and books with cartoon films have been selected to arouse the interest of children and make them read. Children can take the books home and read them. Apart from these 30 seats, libraries have been set up in 50 places by private colleges. The selected person on each street will maintain the library set up there. The library has been set up to keep the mind away from bad habits such as drug use and misuse of cell phones."
The Coimbatore City Police Commissioner, Balakrishnan added, "During the Covid time, children were immersed in mobile phones. Now their mindset has changed due to a library project for each street. Just like the project, which has received a great response from the students, an auto library was launched a few days ago. In the coming days, there is a plan to bring in a taxi library as well."
