Half a tonne of gutkha seized in Coimbatore; five persons arrested by Special Cell

During the vehicle checking in areas under Sulur police station limits, half a tonne of gutkha worth Rs 4.5 lakh was found smuggled. The police arrested five persons from Tamil Nadu, including one from Rajasthan.


Coimbatore: A special team led by Sulur police inspector Madai was conducting a vehicle audit near Sengodagounderpudur division under Sulur police station limits in Coimbatore district.

When they checked a passing vehicle, they found that bags were hidden in the seat. When the police got suspicious and searched it, they found that it contained the banned gutkha hidden in it.

Five persons, including Kanbhadram (25), Dinesh (20), Hatmatta Ram (32) from Rajasthan and Panneerselvam (27) and Saravanakumar (47) from Tamil Nadu, were arrested for illegally selling gutkha and running tobacco products in the car.

Police seized 78 kg of cool lip worth Rs 1.41 lakh, 28 kg of hans worth Rs 83,000, 114 kg vimal worth Rs 1.62 lakh, 36 kg Ganesh worth Rs 13,000, 46 kg of swag worth Rs 14,000, 20 kg of tobaco worth Rs 30,000 and seized a Tata Harrier vehicle ( TN 57 BK 6190) from them.

The total value of half a tonne of banned tobacco products seized by the Special Cell police is said to be rs 4.45 lakh.

The special cell police, which seized tobacco products, have warned that strict action will be taken against those selling gutkha in the coming days.
