Today, on the day of the enactment of the Right to Information Act, Coimbatore district RTI activists organized a celebration in front of the District Collectorate today by distributing sweets to the public.
Coimbatore: Today is the day the Right to Information Act was enacted and under this Act, any citizen in India can seek information from a "public authority" i.e. a government body or an "instrument of the state". It should be responded immediately or within thirty days.
When this law was enacted 17 years ago, the government itself would not have expected the law to give such a jolt to the government.
Though many barriers have been created even today for accessing information under this Act, social activists continue to create awareness in the minds of the people by breaking all barriers and creating awareness of the Right to Information Act.
The Act covers all constitutional centres, including the executive, the legislature and the judiciary. Government documents of any institution or institution, be it parliament or state legislature, can be examined by this act. Any government work can be inspected. Every citizen can review any government documents and government work under this Act.
How do people approach the law:-
People will have to send the application to the Public Information Officer with a fee of Rs 10 to get the information they need. If you haven't received the required information even after 30 days of sending it, you can approach the Central Information Commission (CIC).
Under this Act, the central information commission or the state information commission has the power to take action against the erring officers. Departmental action may be taken for non-delivery of information in a timely manner, giving false information or giving deliberately corrected information.
The Act also provides for levy of a fine from the Information Officer at the rate of Rs 250 each and not exceeding Rs 25,000. However, before the penalty is imposed, adequate opportunity should be given to the public information officer concerned. It is the responsibility of the Public Information Officer to prove that he has acted fairly and carefully.
CELEBRATION BY RTI ACTIVISTS:-

Today is the day when RTI Act was enacted in which the government would respond with folded hands in front of the common man.
