TN Govt. and UYIR join hands to launch ‘UYIR Kutty Cops’ program in Coimbatore Dist.

4.5 lakh students in Coimbatore take road safety pledge administered by the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, M K Stalin, which was also an attempt at a world record for the highest number of students taking a road safety awareness pledge, with officials from the World Records Union adjucating this attempt.


Coimbatore 12, October 2022: The Tamil Nadu Chief Minister, M K Stalin launched virtually the ‘UYIR Kutty Cops’ program - A Road Safety Awareness Education Project in Coimbatore from the Chief Secretariat in Chennai on Wednesday.



The TN Chief Minister also administered a road safety pledge to around 4.5 lakh school students of Coimbatore district on Wednesday as part of the ‘UYIR Kutty Cops’ program launched by UYIR, a Coimbatore-based NGO focused on making Coimbatore an accident-free district.



Close to 5,000 students took the pledge at the CODISSIA Trade Fair Complex D-Hall while the rest of the 4.5 lakh students took the oath at their respective school premises. The Minister for Electricity, Prohibition & Excise, V Senthil Balaji presided over the event.

Dr. V Irai Anbu, Chief Secretary, K Phanindra Reddy, Additional Chief Secretary, Home, Prohibition and Excise Department, Dr. C Sylendra Babu, Director General of Police, Tamil Nadu, Sanjay Jayavarthanavelu, Chairman, UYIR and Dr. Rajasekaran, Managing Trustee, UYIR took part in this event from Chennai virtually.



Dr. G S Sameeran, Coimbatore District Collector, V Balakrishnan, Commissioner, Coimbatore City Police and M Prathap, Commissioner of Coimbatore City Municipality Corporation also took part in this mega launch of ‘UYIR Kutty Cops’ program in Coimbatore.



The students pledged to function as the ‘Policeman at home’ for their parents and elders, and enforce road safety measures. They pledged to enforce:

1)Wearing helmets

2)Fastening seat belts

3)Avoiding rash driving and over speeding

4)Avoiding red light traffic jumping

5)Avoiding mobile phones during driving

The road safety pledge was also an attempt at a world record for the highest number of students taking a road safety awareness pledge, and officials from the World Records Union adjucated this attempt.

UYIR shared that the idea behind the ‘UYIR Kutty Cops’ program is to educate young school children about road safety through a well-framed and formulated curriculum and make them messengers of road safety.

Students belonging to Classes 3 - 8 in all the schools of Coimbatore district including Government, Government-aided, Matriculation and CBSE syllabus will be provided special ‘Workbooks’ while the teachers will receive a ‘Faculty Guide’ under the ‘UYIR Kutty Cops’ program.

The content training for the UYIR Kutty Cops Road Safety Awareness Education Project was provided to all Block Resource Teacher Educators by the Coimbatore City Traffic Police, RTOs and resource persons from UYIR.

The Block Resource Teacher Educators will train all the Government school teachers about UYIR Kutty Cops Road Safety Awareness Education Project, and after that the teachers will take it to the students. These classes will be conducted across all schools soon within this academic year (2022-23) itself. The students will record their learning in the workbooks, and will also begin to take on the role of 'Kutty Cop' at home and urge their parents to be responsible riders.
