People protested near the Gandhi statue as government buses were not plying to places including Oosimalai in Valparai estate areas today.

Coimbatore: Angry people staged a road blockade in Valparai estate areas like Oosimalai, Oosimalai Top and Vellamalai Top as government buses were not plying since this evening.

Students returning home from school and those who went to work were put to great difficulty as the government buses did not come. The public, who had been waiting for the bus for a long time, contacted the bus office and lodged a complaint in this regard.

The students and the general public waited for hours in the hope that the buses would arrive and people who had lost patience for more than a point protested near the Gandhi statue.

Municipal ward members Manikandan and Veeramani, who came to the area after learning about the public protest, also staged a picketing in support of the public.

Traffic was disrupted for more than 1 hour.

Police inspector Karpagam, who reached the spot on receiving the information, held talks with the public and the government bus depot manager and arranged for an alternative bus.

The public called off their protest as an alternative bus was arranged. A tense situation prevailed in Valparai area due to sudden road blockade by the people.
