Station Happiness Officers, a mental health consultant at the city police office, have been selected to provide special training to police personnel on how to manage stress among police personnel.
Coimbatore: World Mental Health Day was declared on October 10, 1994. The day was celebrated for the first time with a specific theme of improving the quality of mental health services around the world. The theme for this year was emphasised on creating mental health and well-being for all as a global priority.
10th October is celebrated as World Mental Health Day and in this regard, two persons have been selected for each police station in the name of STATION HAPPINESS OFFICERS (SHO) in Coimbatore City Police department and given that responsibility.
They will act as representatives of the Commissioner of Police in maintaining the mental health of the police personnel in the police station. They have been carefully selected after mental evaluation. They will periodically advise and assist the cops on mental health issues. They have been given special training in this regard.
There is a need to remove the stigma of mental illness and provide early awareness and treatment. Mental health counsellors have been deployed at the city police office to provide special training to the police personnel on how to manage the stress between the police personnel.
Counselling will continue to be provided to police personnel with mental health-related challenges. Similar counselling will also be given to their family members if required.
Police personnel who are unable to control their anger, those who have problems speaking politely to the public and those who need counselling related to mental health will be identified and counselled and will continue to be counselled until they are completely relieved of the above issues.
Similarly, mental health counsellors at the Commissionerate of Police will regularly provide counselling to the persons affected by various crimes and their family members to enable them to get rid of the mental health impact caused by the crime completely.
The above mental health counselling will also be given to the families of persons affected by murder offences, sexual offences, suicides, deaths due to road accidents, etc. A separate place has been allotted in the Police Commissionerate for this purpose.
