Manjoor police, who investigated the incident, said Manikandan (30), a native of Manjoor near Udhagai in the Nilgiris district, is not married yet. His parents are already dead. One of his sisters lives in Manjakombai. Manikandan, who used to live alone in Manjoor, was living in a tin roofed house near the police station. He was also working as a bag-bearer in Manjoor shop bazaar.
He had already had a habit of drinking alcohol every day. The fire broke out due to the burning of a candle near a wooden cot. Manikandan, whose body was charred to death, died on the spot.
Neighbours who saw the smoke informed the Manjoor police station.The police recovered Manikandan's body and sent it to the Ooty government hospital for post-mortem. Theyhave registered a case and are investigating the matter.
