Two arrested for hoarding and selling tobacco products at Periyanaickenpalayam in Coimbatore

In a raid conducted by the Special Cell police, Jayamurugan of Idikarai and Sivakami of Cheran Street near Mettupalayam were arrested and 169 kg of tobacco products were seized from them.


Coimbatore: The police have arrested two persons for allegedly hoarding and selling tobacco products banned by the Government near Periyanaickenpalayam, and seized 169 kg of tobacco products from them.

On the orders of the Coimbatore District Superintendent of Police, V Badrinarayanan, the Special Task Force (STF) police have been arresting those who are illegally hoarding and selling tobacco products that could be life-threatening and which have already been banned by the Government.

The Special Cell police received a tip-off that tobacco products are being stored for sale in the areas under Periyanaickenpalayam police station limits. Based on this, the police conducted a raid in the area and arrested Jayamurugan (35), a native of Idikarai for storing banned tobacco products for sale. Tobacco products weighing 102 kg were seized from him.

Similarly, Sivakami (49), wife of Baburaj of Cheran Street was arrested for storing tobacco products in Mettupalayam area. 67 kg of tobacco products were seized from her.

The District Superintendent of Police, V Badri Narayanan has warned that strict action will be taken against those selling such products. He also requested the public to inform the police about persons who indulge in such illegal activities.
