City's ESI Hospital sanitation workers' protest called off; Hospital administration decides to increase minimum wage from Rs.331 to Rs.721 for those on contract

Even as the ESI Hospital sanitation workers continued with their strike, talks were held under the leadership of the South Tahsildar Saranya in the presence of the Labour Welfare Department and the Hospital Dean, police and a private contractor.

Coimbatore: Even as the city's ESI Hospital sanitation workers continued with their strike and talks were held under the leadership of the South Tahsildar Saranya in the presence of the Labour Welfare Department and the Hospital Dean, police and a private contractor, the ESI Hospital finally agreed to increase minimum wage from Rs.331 to Rs.721 for those who were working on a contractual basis. The decision led the sanitation workers to call off their strike.

More than 300 sanitation workers are working on a contract basis at the ESI Hospital in Coimbatore. So far, these employees were paid only Rs.331 per month. Meanwhile, in spite of the District Collector's notification, the hospital administration has been avoiding the payment of the minimum wage of Rs.721. Hence, sanitation workers across Coimbatore district went on an indefinite strike demanding minimum wages.

Similarly, even as sanitation workers of ESI Hospital were involved in the strike, talks were held under the leadership of the South Tahsildhar Saranya in the presence of the Labour Welfare Department and Hospital Dean, police and a private contractor. In the negotiations, an agreement was reached and the ESI Hospital administration agreed to pay Rs.721 as per the directive of the Collector. Following this decision, the strike by the sanitation workers of ESI Hospital was called off.

The protest coordination committee said, "In Coimbatore district, sanitation workers are on strike across the district demanding the implementation of the minimum wages announced by the Collector for sanitation workers. The sanitation workers of the ESI hospital had also started the protest from morning. In this situation, an agreement was reached in the peace talks held under the leadership of the South Tahsildar. Out of this, the employees demand that within three months, a sum of Rs.721 should be issued has been fulfilled. They also said that they would build a rest room with toilets for women and implement weekly offs and bonuses. We thank the administration for agreeing to pay Rs.721 to the sanitation workers now."
