The indefinite strike of sanitation workers demanding 16 demands including wage hike and permanent job was called off following an agreement reached in negotiations with the corporation officials.
Coimbatore: The indefinite strike of sanitation workers has been called off after an agreement was reached in the talks held with the Sanitation Workers Union under the leadership of the Mayor of Coimbatore.
The Coimbatore Corporation's contract sanitation workers have been on an indefinite strike since October 2, insisting on 16 demands including minimum wage and wage hike.
Working in Coimbatore Corporation, Council, Municipality and Panchayats for last 3 days, Over 2,000 sanitation workers went on an indefinite strike, disrupting sanitation work at various places.
Following the announcement of a series of protests yesterday, the 300 sanitation workers working at the Coimbatore ESI Hospital were assured that their demands including minimum wages and resting place for women would be fulfilled.
However, there was no consensus in the talks held yesterday led by Coimbatore District Collector, Corporation Commissioner, District Revenue Officer etc.
So the strike of contract sanitation workers continued for the third day today.
This morning more than 500 contract sanitation workers besieged the Coimbatore Corporation office and continued their indefinite strike.
At this stage, a dialogue was held with Coimbatore Mayor Kalpana, Corporation Deputy Mayor Vetrichelvan, Corporation Commissioner Prathap and political party leaders and representatives of 9 Sanitation Workers' Unions.
In this dialogue, the cleanliness workers emphasized their demands. There was a stir for a while as the representatives of the Sanitation Workers Union walked out ignoring the talks when the union representatives who had not been involved in the protest came in.
After that, they were again called for negotiations and discussed their demands. After the negotiations were completed, a resolution was passed in the upcoming cabinet meeting regarding the salary hike of sanitation workers, and it was assured that immediate action would be taken after sending it to the government for consideration.
It has also been decided that the explanation given to the sanitation workers regarding the protest will be taken up for consideration. With this, an agreement was reached in the peace talks held by the Municipal Corporation with the Sanitation Workers Union.
Following this, the protest group has announced that they will now withdraw the protest.
Following this, more than 500 workers gathered in front of the corporation's main office dispersed from there.
Unions have also said that due to the strike, sanitation workers in the municipal, panchayat and municipal areas have suffered health problems.
They also said that the sanitation workers will return to their work as usual from tomorrow.
