While the district administration has declared liquor shops to be closed on Gandhi Jayanti, police arrested 36 people for using this opportunity to hoard liquor and sell them at exorbitant prices.
Coimbatore: The Prohibition Enforcement Directorate (ED) has arrested 36 persons for allegedly selling liquor at exorbitant prices in violation of the ban during Gandhi Jayanti.
Liquor shops in Coimbatore district were closed on October 2 on account of Gandhi Jayanti.
The police received a tip-off that some were using this to illegally store liquor bottles and sell them at a higher price.
Based on the information, the Prohibition Enforcement Department and police conducted intensive searches in various areas including Peelamedu, Podanur, Singanallur and Saravanampatti.
In the raid, a total of 36 people were arrested, including 16 for selling liquor in the city in violation of the ban and 20 in the suburbs.
Police seized 734 bottles of liquor and cash from the arrested persons.
