Revisiting the by-gone era through series of lectures on ‘Pre-Historic Archaeology’

Department of History and Tourism at Bharathiar University, Coimbatore recently organized a series of lectures on various topics related to history. A special lecture on the topic ‘Pre-Historic Archaeology’ was hosted at this department on 31 January. Dr. C. Maheswaran, Former Director, Tribal Research Centre, Govt. of Tamil Nadu was invited as the resource person.



In his address to the students, Dr. C. Maheswaran explained about the pre-historic stage in an eloquent manner. He also showed pictures of several artefacts collected in various excavations which traced the human history from Paleolithic to the metal age.  He added that the ancient human being was well-versed in weaponry and showed pictures of some rare earliest man-made weapons.

He encouraged the students to discover relics from the surface of archaeologically important places. Stone age culture, burial practices during megalithic period and the uniqueness of archaeological finds in Nilgiris were explained to the students. The need to carry on the rich cultural heritage of India by preserving the artefacts of the past was stressed in the lecture.

Dr. S. Boopathi, Professor and Head i/c of the department delivered the welcome address and Sangeetha, guest faculty of the department proposed the vote of thanks.
