Coimbatore-based tourism firm fined Rs.5,000 for not providing basic amenities to customer during foreign tour

An advocate has alleged that he had paid Rs. 50,000 as complete travel fee to a Coimbatore-based travel agency for a foreign tour but while travelling abroad thereafter, even basic amenities were not provided. The Court directed the tourism company to pay back a total of Rs.55,000 in three months, which included a fine of Rs. 5,000.


Coimbatore: A court in Tirupur has imposed a fine of Rs.5,000 on a Coimbatore-based tourism company for charging the complete fare of Rs. 50,000 for a foreign tour and ended up not providing even basic amenities to its customer.

Advocate Manoharan who hails from Coimbatore approached a Coimbatore-based travel agency called 'Travels of India' to travel abroad. The agency reportedly received the full fee of Rs.50,000 for the tour from advocate Manoharan. During the foreign tour, It is said that the tourism firm did not provide him with even basic amenities.

Due to this, the distressed customer filed a case in the Tirupur Consumer Court against the tourism company seeking compensation. The case came up for hearing before a bench comprising Justice Deepa, Justice Bhaskar and Justice Rajendran of the Tirupur Consumer Court.

They heard the case and directed the tourism company to pay a fine of Rs. 5,000 along with the fee of Rs 50,000 collected to the customer and for the mental agony caused to the customer, as well as for the deficiencies in providing proper service to the petitioner. The Bench further ruled that if the firm could not pay back its customer within three months, it will have to pay six percent interest with effect from the date of pronouncement of the verdict.
