According to the report of the study committee constituted to prevent online gambling, the opinions of the School Education Department and parents were sought. The Cabinet has approved the ordinance prepared thereafter and will enforce the same soon after getting the Governor's assent.
Coimbatore: The Tamil Nadu Cabinet has approved an ordinance banning online gambling. A committee headed by the retired High Court Judge, Justice Chandru was constituted to advise the Tamil Nadu Government on enacting a new law to curb online gambling.
The Committee had submitted its report to the Government on June 27 and the report was placed before the cabinet on the same day.
Following this, the survey conducted by the School Education Department on the impact of online games on school children and the feedback received through e-mail from the general public were considered. Based on this, a draft ordinance was prepared in consultation with the Law Department. The ordinance was placed before the Cabinet on August 29. In the meeting, it was decided to further amend the ordinance. Accordingly, a refined ordinance was prepared.
In this context, an ordinance banning online gambling was presented in the Cabinet meeting held on September 26. It was approved by the Cabinet.
Home Secretary Phanindra Reddy said that the ordinance will be approved by the Governor and will come into force soon. At the end of the meeting, the Chief Minister also sounded off Ministers and advised them to refrain from speaking in a controversial manner.
