In Athimathaiyanur village, farmers in distress after a herd of deer and elephants damaged banana and bean crops cultivated in the area, have demanded a compensation of Rs.30,000 each.
Coimbatore: Athimathaiyanur village is located near Velliangadu near Mettupalayam. More than 200 families live in this village. The people of this area are living by doing farming.
The village, which is surrounded by dense forests, is frequently visited by wild animals including leopards, elephants and deer in search of food and water. It is a recurring story of such wild animals eating and trampling on crops in the farmlands of the village.
For the past one month, eight wild elephants have been roaming in the area in herds. These elephants are said to have entered the farmlands and damaged the crops.
Ayyasamy, Senthilkumar, Sridhar and Sulochana, all from Athimathaiyanur village, have cultivated bananas on their farmlands in the area. Last night, a herd of wild elephants entered these farmlands and damaged more than 1,000 banana crops cultivated there by eating and uprooting them.
Similarly, a herd of deer damaged the bean crops cultivated on the farmland of Sampath Kumar, Ramasamy, Krishnasamy, Thampu and Rajendran from the same locality.
This has resulted in a loss of around Rs.30,000 to each farmer. He also asked the forest department to carry out intensive patrolling in their areas. The farmers have demanded that the forest department should pay proper compensation for the damaged crops.
