The Nilgiris: District Collector S P Amrit on Sunday issued a notice to Melur panchayat near Coonoor in the Nilgiris District to sack the Panchayat President and Vice-President after a video of Vice-President Nagaraj talking to contractors demanding commissions went viral on social media.

AIADMK's Renuka is the President of Melur panchayat under Coonoor panchayat union in the Nilgiris district and Nagaraj of the DMK is the Vice-President.

Work was carried out to provide basic amenities in the panchayat last month and the public complained to the Nilgiris Collector Amrit that the concrete mixture was substandard, following which the collector ordered the officials of the department to inspect the work and submit a report a few days ago. During the study it was revealed that the sewage canal construction had been substandard.

Following this, Coonoor panchayat union block development officer, Chandrasekhar and engineer Rajkumar, who were involved in the incident, were suspended. Meanwhile, a video of Melur panchayat vice-president Nagaraj talking to contractors demanding commission went viral and created a sensation.

The percentage of commission paid by the contractors to the officials was recorded in the video, which triggered several shock waves across Tamil Nadu, following which the Nilgiris District Collector S.P. Amrit has sent show cause notices to Melur panchayat president Renuka and vice-president Nagaraj, asking them why they should not be removed from the post, officials said, adding that if they do not give proper explanation for the notices issued under Sections 205 and 206 of the Panchayat Act, both of them will be stripped of their posts for negotiating the commission.
