IFGTB ENVIS staff 'Reintroduce Cheetah' to school students across Coimbatore District

Hand-outs highlighting the importance of Cheetah and the role of individuals in reintroduction of cheetah and conserving wildlife were also distributed to the students and also given to libraries for wider dissemination.

Coimbatore: As part of the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change's (MoEFCC) Reintroduction of the Cheetah program, ENVIS Resource Partner on Forest Genetic Resources and Tree Improvement at the Institute of Forest Genetics and Tree Breeding, Coimbatore organized various awareness activities and lectures on 'Reintroduction of Cheetah' for school and college students, in and around Coimbatore District.

IFGTB ENVIS staff visited schools in person and presented slides on the reintroduction of Cheetah.

They explained that Cheetahs are primarily found in grasslands where they maintain healthy populations of the prey they hunt which benefits the ecosystem. When necessary, Cheetahs seek the weakest and slowest animals in a variety of species. If Cheetahs no longer existed, there would be a domino effect – referred to as a trophic cascade.

An overview on 'Action Plan for Introduction of Cheetah in India' was also discussed.

The hardcopy of the action plan and hand- outs highlighting the importance of cheetah and the role of individuals in reintroduction of cheetah and conserving wildlife were also distributed to the students and also given to libraries for wider dissemination.

A webinar on Reintroduction of Cheetah organized by MoEFCC, GoI was also attended by ENVIS Staff, students of various schools and colleges, GSDP trainees and research scholars of IFGTB.
