Coimbatore: A 77-year-old mentally challenged woman was found murdered under mysterious circumstances at her home where she was living alone near Singanallur in Coimbatore.

Mayilathal (77) hails from Neelikonampalayam near Singanallur. Her husband Ramasamy had already died years ago and her son who was reportedly suffering from mental illness is said to have gone missing 20 years ago.

Mayilathal who lived alone in the house had reportedly not stepped out for the last two days. When a foul smell emanated from the house, neighbours informed her sister Kannammal about it. When Kannammal opened the front door of the house and entered it, she found Mayilathal dead with her hands tied with a cell phone charger wire and a grinder wire around neck.

Kannammal immediately informed the Singanallur police about the murder of her sister and the police rushed to the spot to recover the body and sent it for post-mortem. The police have registered a case and are investigating if Mayilathal could have been murdered for jewellery since there was no trace of any valuables in her house.

The police have also collected clues from the murder spot and are investigating CCTV footage from the area to ascertain if there could be any other motive for the murder.
