One person was killed and eight others were injured after the car in which they were travelling after celebrating Onam lost control and rammed into a roadside shop.
The Nilgiris: In a tragic incident, a youth was killed when the car in which they were travelling after celebrating Onam lost control and rammed into a roadside shop near Coonoor.
Onam was celebrated across the country on the 8th of this month. A large number of people had come to drive the Onam festival and spend the long holiday in the Nilgiris.
Accordingly, a nine-member team arrived in a Scorpio car from Vadakkancheri in Palakkad district of Kerala to the Nilgiris district yesterday.
They were on their way to the Coonoor-Mettupalayam hill road after visiting the Nilgiris, Coonoor and other places when their car was driven by Sanjith (18).
The vehicle was passing through the KMF area next to Kattery when the speeding vehicle suddenly lost control of the driver and collided violently with a roadside shop.
All the passengers in the vehicle were seriously injured. The people immediately rescued them and sent them to the Coonoor government hospital. Sanjit, who was driving the vehicle, succumbed to his injuries.
Others who were seriously injured in the accident are being treated with injuries.
Coonoor police have registered a case and are investigating the matter.
The death of a youth who had come to the Nilgiris for onam festival in an accident has left the family in a state of shock.
Notice boards have been put up in the hilly areas not to speed up or overtake the curves. Accidents involving high-speed vehicles like this are common.
In particular, motorists coming from other places are not well aware of the nature of the mountain roads and hence accidents are becoming a recurring theme.
