During the Covid period, a receptionist working at the One Care Hospital in Saibaba Colony reportedly absconded with upto Rs. 40 lakh unaccounted cash.
Coimbatore: During the pandemic period, 'One Care,' a private hospital in the city's Saibaba Colony area was teeming with patients. Recently, a team led by the Head Doctor of the hospital checked the registration and bills of patients who were admitted at the hospital during the Covid-19 period. The team discovered that though the names of some patients were uploaded onto the computer, the medical bills paid by them were not accounted for.
Latha, a receptionist who was on duty during that particular period was summoned for questioning by the team. Latha allegedly then brought an amount that she had set aside in a draw. On suspicion of fraud, the hospital's accounts were immediately audited. The audit revealed that from October 2019 to October 2021, during the Covid period, Rs.40 lakhs was unaccounted for.
The hospital authorities questioned Latha and fellow receptionists in the hospital. It was discovered that Latha had been mostly on night duty during the two years of pandemic. She allegedly uploaded the names of patients who arrived at the hospital for treatment onto the computer but the medical bills paid by the patients after their treatment was unaccounted for. Latha reportedly too the unaccounted cash home.
Furthermore, in the cases of persons admitted as In-patients, Latha figured that she would get caught if she misappropriated their medical bills and hence preferred to misappropriate payments made toward medical bills of the Out-patients.
Also, if someone questioned her about the money in her bag, Latha would always convince them with various explanations that it was her own money. Latha also reportedly continued to emphasise on working the night shift at the hospital since the cashier, the hospital's senior executives and senior doctors were always present during the day shift which did not allow her to steal cash. She also ensured that during the night shift her fellow receptionists were not around her while she was misappropriating cash.
A complaint has been lodged at the Saibaba Colony police station against Latha for misappropriating almost Rs. 40 lakh while on duty at One Care Hospital.Based on the complaint, the police have registered a case under Sections 406 and 420.
The police are on the lookout for Latha who is reportedly absconding. Moreover, the police are also reportedly planning to question several persons in connection with the scam.
