College students should use handloom products and help uplift the lives of handloom weavers - Minister Kayalvizhi Selvaraj in Coimbatore

Participating as a special guest in the "Kaitharikku Kai Koduppom" program organized at Nirmala college for women in the city, the Minister urged that handloom products should be worn by the students in large numbers, as these measures would help uplift the lives of handloom weavers.



Coimbatore: After the government raised the income ceiling of Adi Dravida families from Rs.3 to Rs.8 lakhs, one of the eligibility criteria to avail scholarship to study abroad, more number of students have benefitted, said State Adi-Dravidar and Tribal Welfare Minister Kayalvizhi Selvaraj.



Participating as a special guest in the "Kaitharikku Kai Koduppom" program organized at Nirmala college for women in the city, she said that the role of dressing plays a vital role in society and we should dress up not only to cover ourselves but to gain respect from others.



While adding that handloom products should be worn by the students in large numbers, she said these measures would help uplift the lives of handloom weavers.

"The dressing pattern has changed a lot since my college days, we used to put on a modern dress only once a week, then but the trend has changed a lot now" the minister noted.



It proved an eye-catching sight when the students and teachers attended the function in handloom sarees procured from the Chinnalapatti cluster of weavers. Over 2,500 sarees were procured at a total cost of Rs.8.20 lakhs for the occasion.

The Minister also added that students should not take cowardly and take extreme decisions at any moment in their lives, she said they should learn to discuss their problems with parents and teachers.



An oath was also administered by the students and faculty members to promote handloom products.



Later while speaking to the media, the Minister for Adi Dravida Welfare said that "A new vocational training program under THADCO has been started for which the students who have completed class 12 and others pursuing college studies can apply.

An entrance test would be conducted for the selection of candidates for the courses, and loans would be extended for them to start new entrepreneurial ventures, while still studying at college."

Further adding, she said Rs.5 crores has been allocated for the study abroad program for Adi dravida students and raising the income ceiling has indeed benefited many students.
