Representatives of Rail Enthusiasts from Coimbatore requested to restore the train services from Coimbatore to Madurai through the shortest route via Palani which was running successfully during the Meter gauge period.
Coimbatore: Highlighting the need to restore train services from Southern districts including Madurai to Coimbatore via Palani, representatives of rail enthusiasts met Madurai MP S. Venkatesan and Madurai DRM.
A request was placed for the restoration of train services from Coimbatore to Madurai through the shortest route via Palani which was running successfully during the Meter guage period.
"Coimbatore is among the fastest growing cities in Tamil Nadu and the third highest revenue generating station in Southern Railways. Several lakhs of people living in Coimbatore belong to the Southern districts. They are into service sector, trading, construction, press, MSME and many more areas.
Hence, keeping in mind the pressing need, train services from Southern districts of Tamil Nadu to Coimbatore must be restored via Palani which is the shortest route", they appealed to the MP and the DRM.
They also noted that the request for restoration along with letters of support from 200 Associations from Coimbatore district, 20 Grama Panchayat resolutions and over 2000 signatures in an online petition were presented to the Railways Minister.

Acknowledging their appeal, both MP S Venkatesan and the DRM Madurai assured to take up this subject matter to the higher authorities to restore the train facilities at the earliest.
Following are the trains requested by he rail enthusiasts to be restored:
1. Tiruchendur train via Madurai must be rerouted from Pollachi to Mettupalayam via Kinathukaduvu and Coimbatore.
2. Madurai to Coimbatore Intercity Express via Palani must be restored immediately. This service can originate from Thoothukudi early in the morning as a Superfast Express train.
3.Restoration of the historic express from Rameswaram to Coimbatore via Madurai and Palani, as an overnight train should be carried out at the earliest possible time.
4. The early morning passenger train service departing Dindigul to Coimbatore via Palani should be restored.
5. The successful weekly train from Tirunelveli to Mettupalayam via Tenkasi and Coimbatore should be regularised with increase in frequency.
