Over 500 people participated in the marathon organised by Swami Vivekananda Seva Kendra which covered a total of 7.2 km starting from Hindustan college at Nava India.
Coimbatore: Union Minister L. Murugan flagged off the "Freedom Run" mini marathon here on Saturday which was organised by Swami Vivekananda Seva Kendra, as part of the 75th Independence day celebrations.

Over 500 public wearing uniform jerseys participated in the marathon and the marathoners covered a total of 7.2 kms starting from Hindustan college at Nava India, and they ran through Lakshmi mills before returning to the starting point.
The Minister also ran along with other competitors for a lengthy stretch in the marathon.

Later, speaking to the media persons, Union Minister Murugan said that the general public are celebrating the nation's 75th independence day by hoisting the tricolour at their homes on August 13, 14 and 15 as a part of "Har Ghar Tiranga". Even tribals living in remote villages are taking part in the celebrations with a lot of enthusiasm. The patriotic people all over the nation have hoisted the tricolour at their homes."
Further adding he said that the government has organised various events for a length of 10 days to celebrate the historic occasion in a fitting manner.
The "Freedom run" is being organised to drive home the importance of the national flag and the values it represents for the country.
While noting that the country is honouring the freedom fighters he said the 150th birth anniversary of V.O.Chidambaram is being celebrated in the nation. He also cited how Tamil Nadu has contributed to the freedom movement by producing towering leaders such as Veera Pandiya Kattamomman, Pulithevan, Bharahtiyar and others.
He also said that India is on the path to become a Super power as was dreamt by APJ Abdul Kalam in the year 2047.
