Acting on a tip off Inspector Gnasekaran was carrying out vehicle check at Kuniamuthur- Edayarpalayam pirivu and intercepted a four wheeler in which the ration rice was hidden in 75kg bags totalling about 3 tons.
Coimbatore: Excise department officials arrested Martin (42), a native of Kerala and seized 3 tons of PDS ration rice hidden in a four wheeler.
Acting on a tip off Inspector Gnasekaran was carrying out vehicle check at Kuniamuthur- Edayarpalayam pirivu at around 12 pm last night, and intercepted a four wheeler in which the ration rice was hidden in 75kg bags totalling about 3 tons. They arrested the driver and seized the four wheeler.
The Excise officials are on the look out for Nizam, the owner of the vehicle. It is said that smuggling of PDS ration rice is rampant as smugglers procure PDS rice from Kumiamuthur and other areas for low prices here and smuggle it into Kerala to sell it for a premium.
The arrested person was produced in court and remanded in custody.
