Tourism dept watcher dies in an elephant attack near Sadivayal in Coimbatore

A tourism department watcher Murugan (52) lost his life when he was attacked by a wild elephant at the backyard of his home at Ssengampatti village near Sadivayal in Coimbatore, today.



Coimbatore: A tourism department watcher Murugan (52) lost his life when he was attacked by a wild elephant at Ssengampatti village near Sadivayal in Coimbatore, today. A life lost due to a man-animal conflct on the occassion of World Elephant day which is observed today, has triggered immense grief among the forest department officials and the people of the victim's village.

According to sources, Murugan had gone to relieve himself when he came face to face with the wild elephant, which attacked him. He sustained serious injuries and his neighbours rushed him to Coimbatore Medical college hospital, but he died on the way.

The wild elephants were later driven into deep forest areas by forest department officials.

In the meanwhile, a renewed demand to increase the solatium amount to Rs.10 lakhs as is practiced in Kerala for the fatal victims of elephant attack has been raised. Presently Tamil Nadu Government is extending Rs.5 lakh for the deaths caused by wild elephant attacks.
