The weekly Special Train services have been welcomed by passengers with more demand to continue the operation of the train.
Coimbatore: The Mettupalayam-Tirunelveli Special Train service on the Mettupalayam-Coimbatore-Pollachi-Palani-Dindigul-Madurai-Tenkasi-Tirunelveli route has generated an income of Rs.80 lakh in two-and-a-half months.
Passengers who have welcomed the Weekly Special Train services have demanded for a continued run of the Mettupalayam-Tirunelveli Special Trains since it has not only generated good income but has also facilitated convenience of travel for the public.
Weekly special trains were run between Tirunelveli-Mettupalayam every Thursday and Mettupalayam-Tirunelveli every Friday, from last April 21 to June 27. These trains were operated as summer special trains via Coimbatore-Pollachi-Palani-Dindigul-Madurai-Rajapalayam-Tenkasi- Ambai. These night train services were the first run to South Districts via Pollachi-Palani.
In a reply to Pandiyaraja, a passenger from Tenkasi who had questioned RTI about the revenue generated and the number of passengers on these weekly special trains, the Southern Railways stated that 7814 passengers travelled from Tirunelveli-Mettupalayam on these special trains which generated Rs. 38 lakhs while the Mettupalayam-Tirunelveli train service generated Rs.42.14 lakhs with 8380 passengers. Hence, a total of Rs. 80 lakhs was generated with a total of 16,194 passengers travelling on these weekly special trains which ran 10 services on both routes in two-and-a-half months.
Pandiyaraja also opined, "Currently the Tirunelveli-Mettupalayam Special Trains are running every Thursday and the Mettupalayam-Tirunelveli Special Trains run every Friday. Currently, the Tirunelveli-Mettupalayam special trains passing through Tenkasi are crowded as the tourist season is in full swing in Courtallam, as also the Saral Vizha. These special trains are run on Tatkal fares and the railways also get a substantial income.
Therefore, the Southern Railways should take steps to run this special train permanently to Mettupalayam via Tenkasi- Madurai-Dindigul-Palani. Since the Tirunelveli-Mettupalayam special train operations were scheduled to end on August 18, the Southern Railways should immediately announce the extension and operation of these special trains running via the Pollachi-Palani railway route. The extension should be announced while the special train services are still on. Only then will it be easy for the public to make regular bookings," he added.
