Heavy rains in catchment areas: Siruvani dam reaches near full capacity of 43 ft.

The storage level at the dam has reached its near capacity at 43 feet today from the 37 feet last week. If the dam reaches full capacity, this will be the second time the Siruvani dam has reached its full capacity of 45 feet this rainy season.

Coimbatore: Following incessant rains in the catchment areas of Siruvani dam, the sluice gates have been opened to release excess waters for the safety of the dam.

The storage level at the dam has reached its near capacity at 43 feet today from the 37 feet last week. The released waters would reach Noyyal and Bhavani rivers due to which the storage level might increase in Pillur dam, say PWD officials.

As most of the water bodies in the city andoutskirts are already filled to the brim, excess water released from Siruvani dam is expected to cause flooding. With more rains expected to lash the district in the coming days, bridges including the 30 feet bridge at the Mathuvarayapuram Panchayat near Thondamuthur are on the verge of getting submerged.

If the dam reaches full capacity, this is will be the second time the Siruvani dam has reached its full capacity of 45 feet this rainy season. When Kerala officials released excess waters from the dam after it reached its full capacity last time around, it drew criticism from the Tamil Nadu office. PWD officials condemned the Kerala move to open the vents without consulting them.

However, due to continuous rains, the storage would be maintained at the optimum level to ensure drinking water supply to Coimbatore city" said the officials from Tamil Nadu Water and drainage board (TWAD).

It may be recalled that Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M K Stalin hs urged his Kerala counterpart Pinarayi Vijayan to maintain storage in Siruvani dam up to the full reservoir level to meet the water requirements of Coimbatore city and its suburbs.
