Tirupur: Over 50 villagers belonging to Merku Pathi village in Tirupur district thronged the Collectorate on Monday and petitioned the District Collector not to close down or shift the functioning TASMAC shop in their locality.
The villagers argued that if the present TASMAC Shop No 2010 is closed down, the villagers have to travel at least 7 kms to get liquor. When workers are forced to travel kms in the nighttime accidents may occur, they noted.
As the present shop is situated in the outskirts of the village, and there are no cases of nuisance attached with the shop. The farmers and daily wage earners appealed to the Collector not to shift the TASMAC outlet for any reason.
While petitions are being filed to stop setting up of new TASMACs or close down existing shops, the petition of the villagers urging not to close down the liquor shop garnered the attention of the public, widely.
